GARRAS isn’t just a fashion show - it’s a movement. This annual event transforms the trans, gender nonconforming, and intersex (TGI) community and their allies into high-fashion icons. As we mark our organization’s 15th anniversary of serving the transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex (TGI) community, The TransLatin@ Coalition is thrilled to announce the 10th anniversary of our GARRAS Fundraising Fashion Show. This milestone event commemorates a decade of showcasing fashion and style and underscores the importance of creating a space where everyone feels loved, welcomed, and embraced.
We at The TransLatin@ Coalition are devastated by the violent murder of Meraxes Medina, a beautiful trans Latina, who was shot and killed in South LA on March 20th. Meraxes is at least the sixth trans person to lose their life to violence in 2024, a tragic statistic that reflects the brutal reality faced by far too many in our community.
In 2013, The TransLatin@ Coalition unveiled a groundbreaking study that brought to the forefront the harsh realities faced by Trans, Gender Nonconforming, and Intersex (TGI) individuals in the United States. The report, spanning crucial areas of life, from access to identification documents to experiences with violence, served as a wake-up call to society about the systemic barriers entrenched within our institutions.
In recent years, The TransLatin@ Coalition has been at the forefront of advocating for policies that uplift and support the transgender, gender diverse, and intersex (TGI) community. The recent deaths of Nex Benedict and Reyna Hernandez, a 54-year-old Latina trans woman from Renton, Washington, serve as a painful reminder of the ongoing violence targeting TGI communities.

The outpouring of support and solidarity underscores the collective commitment to safeguarding the safety and well-being of the transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex (TGI) community in California, particularly in the vibrant city of Los Angeles.
The TransLatin@ Coalition (TLC,) in collaboration with the LA County Commission on Human Relations and other LGBTQ+ community organizations and law enforcement officials, will hold a joint press conference to address the bomb threatened to be detonated on Monday, April 15th, and hate mail targeting LGBTQ organizations.
