SUMMARY

The Training Specialist (TS) reports directly to the Training Coordinator and serves as a lead facilitator and implementer of The TransLatin@ Coalition’s (TLC) training initiatives. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (TGI) competency trainings and supporting the implementation of strategic capacity-building and learning programs. The Training Specialist plays a key role in advancing TLC’s capacity-building efforts by facilitating workshops, supporting curriculum development, coordinating training logistics, and maintaining strong relationships with community partners and trained agencies. This position ensures that training delivery reflects TLC’s values, advocacy priorities, and commitment to directly impacted communities. The ideal candidate is a dynamic and engaging facilitator with strong communication skills, a deep understanding of TGI communities, and the ability to translate complex social justice and policy issues into accessible, actionable learning experiences. This position will have a six-month probationary period upon hiring for performance purposes. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Be available to work a minimum of forty hours at The TransLatin@ Coalition office in Los Angeles.

  • Be available to work at least forty hours per week.

  • Ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences, including elected officials, attorneys, advocates, impacted communities, TGI Latin@s and other immigrant groups, other supporters, and the public.

  • Set up appointments and organize TGI trainings with Shelters, Community organizations, and Governmental Agencies throughout California.

  • Support the planning and execution of strategic campaigns aligned with specific training and policy priorities.

  • Prioritize directly impacted communities and individuals and coordinate with campaign partners to track progress and win on the campaign’s goals.

  • Serve as a liaison to organizations and agencies that are trained to ensure continuous capacity building and support.

  • Develop equitable and reciprocal relationships with community organizations, networks, and community members impacted by LGBTQ+ discrimination, mass incarceration, and gender-based violence.

  • Works closely with research partners to ensure TLC’s research informs the development of local and statewide policy agendas and develops benchmarks to ensure adequate progress toward TGI competency training, campaign goals, and adjusting plans as necessary.

  • Provide strategic analysis and background for implementing TLC’s Policy Agenda in partnership with TLC’s executive team.

  • Represent the organization in the community with funders, stakeholders, partners, and the people we work with in a respectful manner that embodies the organization's values and aligns with your job description and role on the management team.

  • Participate in and organize community educational forums to gather information to support the development and implementation of the Policy Department's priorities. 

  • Participate in TLC’s events, staff meetings, training, and staff development opportunities on an ongoing basis.

  • Other activities as required to conduct agency objectives related to training and advocacy.

  • Must have legitimate transportation and current insurance to be able to run occasional errands, appointments, and out-of-office site visits as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Public Health, Public Policy, or Behavioral Science-related fields, or at least three years of working with TGI people, understanding their experiences and the policy needs of TGI people.  

  • Proof of employment eligibility, a valid California Driver’s License, and/or California Identification, and yearly automobile insurance.

  • Ability to master a wide range of information, take the initiative, be organized and strategic, and adapt and work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work with diverse communities (e.g., multi-gender, ethnic, generation, monolingual Spanish speakers, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, substance, homeless, disabled, etc.)

  • Experience and knowledge of PC hardware and software (Windows, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel are a must).

  • Ability to conduct trainings, presentations, workshops, and coordinate policy-related activities competently.

  • Ensure that all high-priority messages are highlighted and responded to promptly.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and incoming requests from supervisor(s); experience taking the initiative and using independent judgment in non-routine matters.

  • Excellent time management with the ability to prioritize and work with a high level of accuracy within a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, highly organized, and proactive in anticipating the department's needs; able to track long-term strategies/projects.

  • Strong communication skills: oral, written, and strong interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with high-level donors and stakeholders.

  • An updated annual tuberculosis test – read, reviewed, and dated by a nurse clinician before employment and provided annually to Human Resources.

  • Work on weekends, evenings, and at special events as needed.

NON-ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Relevant community policy-related and cultural transformation training.

  • Experience and knowledge of MS Access and Google Suite.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English Preferred.

  • Knowledge of specific policy needs and issues of TGI people.

  • Understanding how policy works & being able to articulate and draft written language for policy change.

  • Excellent writing and reading skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on Social Work, Public Health, Public Policy, Behavioral Sciences, and/or related courses, or a minimum of three years working with TGI communities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing this job, the executive typically spends time sitting, standing, walking, frequently driving, carrying (max. 20lbs), lifting (max. 20lbs), listening, and speaking.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Ergonomically safe office environment with a desktop computer, desk, chair, and natural light from windows.

  • Occasionally, in the fieldwork, including but not limited to shelters, governmental agencies, rallies, community festivals, conferences, nightclubs, and other outreach venues that the target population frequents. Must be comfortable with environmental conditions at outreach locations, including noise levels, aggressive patrons, and substance use.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The individual in this position must be able to accommodate any or all the following: constant distractions, interruptions, uncontrollable changes in priorities/work schedules, availability for on-call/duty after regular working hours, and exposure to inappropriate behavior and language of others.
