A Historic Victory for Our 2TGI Community

We’re celebrating a powerful step forward for our community!

On October 13, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1487, authored by Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D–Morro Bay), officially renaming California’s Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund to the Two-Spirit, Transgender, Gender Nonconforming, and Intersex (2TGI) Wellness and Equity Fund.

This change is more than a new name — it’s recognition of the beautiful diversity that makes up our community. It acknowledges that Two-Spirit, gender nonconforming, and intersex people have always been part of our collective fight for health, justice, autonomy, and equity.

At The TransLatin@ Coalition, we know how hard our community and allies have worked to make moments like this possible. We celebrate this victory alongside every advocate, organizer, and supporter who continues to push for inclusive and affirming health care for all 2TGI people across California.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Assemblymember Addis for her leadership, to Governor Newsom for signing this bill into law, and to every organization and activist who helped make this a reality.

This is a win for all of us — and a reminder that together, we are shaping a future where every member of our community is seen, valued, and cared for.

“At a time where there is so much uncertainty from our federal government and the livelihood of trans, gender expansive, intersex and two spirited people, AB1487 provides an assurance to all of our communities to understand that we live in a great state that is inclusive and supports the betterment of our lives. I'm grateful that Governor Gavin Newsom signed this bill affirming his commitment to include and support all Californians”

-Bamby Salcedo, CEO & President of The TransLatin@ Coalition

These victories are a testament to what’s possible when our community organizes, shows up, and demands justice. Each of these bills represents a collective win for safety, inclusion, and dignity — not just for 2TGI people, but for all Californians.

This progress wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our community, our coalition partners, and the elected officials who championed these causes.

Together, we’re building a California where every Two-Spirit, Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex person can thrive.
