Defending TGI Rights in Puerto Rico
The TransLatin@ Coalition is committed to ensuring that the voices and rights of Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (TGI) people in Puerto Rico are not only recognized but prioritized. As part of our national agenda, we extend our policy and advocacy programs to the island to address the unique challenges faced by TGI communities in U.S. territories.
Strategic Advocacy and Coalition Building
In line with our 2022–2027 strategic plan, Trans Power in the Flesh, we are working to:
Institutionalize trans-led spaces that center Puerto Rican TGI leadership.
Develop advocacy training and community education, empowering local leaders to influence legislative and policy outcomes.
Strengthen integrated systems—including housing, health, and employment services—that are responsive to the realities of Puerto Rico’s TGI population.
Amplify Puerto Rican voices at federal advocacy levels, ensuring that territorial concerns are not marginalized.
Legislative Engagement and Mobilization
Our policy department collaborates with stakeholders across local and federal levels to:
Push for inclusive policies in healthcare access, anti-discrimination protections, and legal gender recognition.
Oppose anti-trans legislative proposals that may be introduced or mirrored in Puerto Rican governance structures.
Equip Puerto Rican TGI communities with the tools to engage in democratic processes through civic education and legislative visits.
Community-Led Change
We believe change is strongest when it is community-led.
That’s why we are:
Facilitating leadership development programs for TGI advocates in Puerto Rico.
Hosting policy roundtables and listening sessions to co-create our local policy platform.
Supporting grassroots organizations and initiatives through technical assistance and strategic partnerships.
