LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, June 18, 2025 — The TransLatin@ Coalition released the following statement from President and Chief Executive Officer Bamby Salcedo in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Skmetti v. United States, which upheld Tennessee’s ban on lifesaving healthcare for transgender youth.

“We are outraged by today’s Supreme Court decision, a direct attack on the health, safety, and dignity of our trans communities, especially our youth.

This ruling is yet another reminder of the urgent and ongoing struggle to protect our people from violence, erasure, and political interference. Trans youth deserve to be safe, affirmed, and free to live authentically, not targeted by harmful bans rooted in fear and ignorance.

Access to gender-affirming care is not up for debate; it is life-saving. For trans adolescents, hormone therapy can be a crucial part of building a future where they can thrive. These treatments have been safely used for decades, and denying this care puts lives at risk.

We demand that our families, particularly Black, Brown, immigrant, and working-class families, be trusted to make decisions in partnership with doctors and their children, without the intrusion of extremist politicians.

At The TransLatin@ Coalition, we know that the fight for health care is a fight for liberation. We stand in solidarity with every trans young person, every family under attack, and every provider doing the work to affirm our lives.

We are not alone, and we are not backing down. We will keep fighting for our communities to live freely, to access the care we need, and to shape our own futures, on our own terms.

Trans liberation is non-negotiable.”
