No one should have to wonder whether their identity will be used as a reason to deny them health care coverage. For transgender, gender-expansive, and intersex (TGI) people, that concern is real. The TransLatin@ Coalition is calling on our community and allies to speak up for AB 1876.
The bill has passed the California Legislature and is awaiting Governor Newsom’s decision. If signed, it would prohibit California licensed health plans and insurers from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Its protections against sex discrimination explicitly include gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, and intersex traits. The bill also addresses discriminatory coverage exclusions and limits affecting gender-affirming care. Read the bill and check its status.
These protections matter when someone is choosing a health plan, seeking care, or asking an insurer to cover a service. Our communities deserve coverage decisions grounded in care, not bias. AB 1876 would put clear protections into California law at a time when federal protections face uncertainty.
