State of California makes crucial investment to protect gender-affirming care and strengthen California’s network of providers

$26 million will stabilize California provider network, and $30 million will serve as a pot of money for medical providers to bill to, as they make up for rising uncovered costs

California has made a one-time $26 million dollar investment over a three-year period to stabilize the state’s provider network through grants for infrastructure and operations, along with a $30 million investment to be allocated to an Uncompensated Care Fund that will be available for providers to bill for rising costs.

In total, the $300 million from the 2026-27 California State Budget to lower healthcare costs to both Californians and health care providers leads to a pathway for more affordable gender-affirming care.

The funding would rebuild and maintain networks to ensure medically-necessary gender-affirming care remains available, following devastating losses as a direct result of federal restrictions and intimidations.

Though still legally protected under California law, the federal administration’s intentional targeting of gender-affirming care has caused ripple effects, leaving many families in the state without access, and struggling to maintain continuity of care.

“We are grateful to Governor Newsom, policymakers, and advocates who took action to protect access to care for our community in California. Our organization will continue to fight to protect and support our community. Our policy team will continue to track the implementation of these funds, and ensure that these funds continue to support the livelihood of our community across the state,” said The TransLatin@ Coalition’s CEO and President, Bamby Salcedo.

By designating state funding to stabilize the gender-affirming care provider network in California, state leaders are securing in-state avenues for a delivery system of services, providing support for providers in order to maintain crucial networks of access for gender-affirming care, and is showing its commitment towards concretely supporting TGI Californians.

This is an imperative response to escalating federal actions that have had immediate and disastrous impacts to TGI people’s access to gender-affirming care, particularly for youth and Californians with federal healthcare coverage.
